Decorative coatings are widely applied in daily life. The coatings are used in product designs and architectural designs to simply value up appearance and environmental comfort.
Against common applied powder painting or lacquering PVD coatings have several advantages. PVD coatings make it possible to keep the metallic gloss while applying a variety of different colors. Thus PVD coated layer stacks are very thin in contrast to paintings and lacquering the usage of raw coating material is much less.
A special feature of PVD coatings is that the coatings are produced without any liquid chemicals such as dye solutions or electrolytes. The coating material is directly converted into a vapor phase in high vacuum before getting deposited onto the substrate. Thus PVD coating is a 100% green technology.
With our advanced PVD coating technology we provide large area decorative coatings on stainless steel strips.

Especially for the requirements in architectural design we can provide under-saturated colors of bronze, copper and gold tint but also tints of grey and even more. 1. What's the specialty of SMMT's decorative coating technology?
Our roll-2-roll metal strip coater is able to coat metals strips with 900mm…1250mm width and 0.2…0.7mm thickness and can be equipped with different material configurations.
With our advanced co-sputter process we are able do engineer new compound layers which gives us a higher degree of freedom in designing decorative coatings in contrast to other technologies.
Our productivity is ranging from 200m2/h to 750m2/h depending on the coated product.
2. What is SMMT's coating capability?
We coat our decorative coatings on coiled stainless steel strips having strip lengths from 250m to a few km.
Within the same coil we can adjust and coat several colors.
Typical adjustment lengths ranging from 50m to 200m. Thus with a 1000m long strip either sample coatings of 5 different colors is possible or 200m of adjustment and 800m of coated product.
After adjustment we can keep the color stable over a production period of several km.
3. What's SMMT's color range?
We are very flexible in colors, covering a huge color range. For each color tone we can do variations in nuances making a color for example slightly darker or brighter, shifting the color to more red or more yellow etc.

4. What stainless steel grades are recommended for your intended application?
Stainless steels are consisting of a huge variety of iron bases alloys with a variety of properties and applications.
Generally spoken, stainless steel alloys are defined by containing a minimum of 10.5% chromium. Chromium serves to build a natural surface passivation which works as barrier and make the stainless steel more resistant to corrosion attacks.
Other elements are added and the chromium content increased to further improve the corrosion resistance and heat-resisting properties, enhance mechanical properties and provide specific fabrication characteristics.

a) General information to our stainless steel selection

201 grades sheets and coils:
201 grades are not standardized for sheets and coils. But there are several specific alloys such as 201L1, 201L4, 201LH, 201LJ and more available on the market.
The special feature of 201 grades is the substitution of nickel with manganese within the alloy which makes this grade cheaper to 304 and 316 grades, while it's still austenitic in character with mechanical properties similar or tougher to 304 and 316.
304 grades sheets and coils:
Grade 304 is the most commonly used stainless steel. It is an austenitic, corrosion resistant steel with excellent strength, toughness, fabrication characteristics and weldability.
316 grades sheets and coils:
Grade 316 is an improved version of 304. The addition of molybdenum and a slightly higher nickel content gives this grade a much increased corrosion resistance in many aggressive environments.
430 grades sheets and coils:
Ferritic 430 grade is cheaper than any of the 300 series steels while it has good corrosion resistant, has resistance to heat and oxidation and is not susceptible to stress corrosion cracking.

Generally a higher chromium (Cr) content and addition of molybdenum (Mo) and nitrogen (N) will lead to a higher resistance against general corrosion and pitting corrosion.
PREN = %Cr + 3.3 x %Mo + 16 x %N
The PREN number gives the tendency for resistance against pitting corrosion. A higher PREN number means higher resistance to pitting corrosion.
c) Mechanical property data
304 and 316 sheets have comparable mechanical properties, while 316 tends to be harder. 201 sheets can have similar properties to 304 and 316 but are also available with higher toughness and hardness.
430 sheets feature a lower toughness and lower hardness compared to 201, 304 and 316.
